Review

Opened in June 2009, the Cumbres Puerto Varas has really set new standards for the accommodation in and around Puerto Varas. One of the four Cumbres hotels in Chile, hotel Cumbres Puerto Varas is certainly one of the most stylish and upmarket properties with 90 rooms and a whole swathe of facilities, this is definitely one of the top picks.

Location

Situated right in the heart of this small town, the hotel commands outstanding views out across Lago Llanquihue (deep lake in Mapuche language) to the two volcanoes of Osorno and Calbuco, which stand sentinel to this stunning region.

Layout

The first thing that strikes you as you enter this grand property is how intimate and friendly it all is…the use of wood and windows has given the Cumbres Puerto Varas a true connection with the lake and the environment of the area. The main areas of the hotel are given to comfort and relaxation, with the view out to the lake as the backdrop. Comfortable armchairs and sofas, grouped around the log fire, open out to the main restaurant and the outdoor dining area. The key idea here is to be able to come back after a day’s exploring, have a shower and relax for an hour or two before tucking in to another great meal.

Rooms

All 5 room type categories are spacious, of modern neutral décor, have super king beds and are fully equipped to the standard of a good business city hotel. In the standard and superior rooms, the bathrooms are on the small side and there is nothing really exceptional about the rooms other than comfort and space which you would expect from a hotel of this category.

Features

Where the hotel stands out is the common areas, food, service and facilities including a great gym, spa and small business centre. The wow factor is certainly found in the main sitting room featuring a great stone fireplace which takes centre stage. Here you are encouraged to curl up with a good book in one of the several comfortable sofas. The salon leads on to the winter garden in a glass top terrace where one can enjoy a good cup of whittard tea of Chelsea in the afternoon from an expansive tea menu. The Aracauria bar is cosy and inviting and connected to the very good Cumbres del Lago restaurant where a fusion of Chilean specialties, seafood and international cuisine are on offer. There is a small outside sitting area as well on a sunny day. We also like the views from the 7th floor pool and the great facilities on offer. All in all, if a boutique experience is not a priority, this is where you’ll want stay when coming to the area!

Great location and views, welcoming feel, good food

In the town…but you don’t really notice!
