Review

This is the newest of the three Tierra hotels and the only luxury hotel on the enchanting island of Chiloé; an archipelago just off the coast of Chile’s Lake District in Northern Patagonia with its own unique culture and traditions. Unlike at the other two hotels in Patagonia and the Atacama, the location of this hotel is less about the landscapes and more about discovering the deep-rooted traditions and laid back way of life of Chiloé and its people.

The hotel is located on the eastern side of the island in an area home to migratory birds and seals; a 30 minute drive from Castro airport or a 3 hour drive and ferry journey from Puerto Montt airport on the mainland.

Built to reflect the style of the traditional “palafitos” or stilted houses that Chiloé is famous for, with its top-heavy second floor, the architecture of the hotel blends into its surroundings and has been designed to optimise use of natural resources like wind, sunlight and rainwater to ventilate and light the hotel. It’s exterior is also clad in wooden shingles to help insulate the hotel; a technique taken from the island’s carpentry traditions.

There are 24 rooms and suites in total; 12 on the upper floor and 12 in a new extension added in July 2017. Each room comes with a jacuzzi and is fitted with a large floor to ceiling window giving panoramic views over the bay in front of the hotel. In keeping with local building styles, the rooms are clad with pale native wood and decorated with hand-dyed rugs and throws made from local lambswool.

Guests are encouraged to spend time in the common areas rather than in their rooms so there are cosy reading, dining and living rooms with fireplaces and comfy sofas to relax in. Food at the hotel is made with locally-sourced ingredients and influenced by traditional dishes from Chiloé like fresh oysters and “Curanto”; a seafood stew cooked over hot stones. There is also a spa and relaxation area within the hotel with a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and heated indoor & outdoor pools.

Activities at the hotel are based around discovering more about Chiloé’s deep-rooted culture and traditions and include visits to the island’s UNESCO World Heritage churches, visits to local markets, horse riding, biking, hiking and kayaking. Guests can also go bird watching on wetlands adjacent to property, which are home to migratory birds or take a boat trip through the island's fjords and canals on the hotel's very own, Williche vessel.

Only luxury property on Chiloé

It requires more effort to get to but that's part of its charm
