A small guesthouse in one of the quieter areas of Santiago, CasaSur is the opposite of large and impersonal. With only six rooms and the owners on hand to offer help with recommendations and directions, this little hotel in Barrio Italia is a home away from home and a great base for a couple of nights exploring the city.

Tucked away down a quiet street in the pretty Barrio Italia, CasaSur is a 5-minute walk from Santa Isabel metro station and a 15-minute walk from Plaza Italia in the centre of the city. Although not as popular with tourists, Barrio Italia is a great area of the city to be in with restaurants, cafés, bars and antique shops.

The hotel is made up of five bright and airy rooms within the main building of the house and an outhouse, which sleeps 3, has separate access through the garden. Most of the rooms are double en-suite apart from the outhouse and another room, which has a separate adjoining space with two bunk beds.

The ground floor of the house has been turned into an open plan living and dining space with a long breakfast table and a small reception area where you can pick up maps and city guides. The pretty walled patio outside the house has tables and chairs for alfresco dining in the summer.

With no extra features to mention apart from the friendly and welcoming service and the obvious benefits of having owners always on site and on hand to help with recommendations and reservations, Casa Sur is well suited to travellers who don’t mind hopping on the metro and exploring more independently.

Small and personal

Not for those wanting to be in the main tourist area
