Review

First off we must emphasise that we are big fans of Tierra properties. They seem to know intuitively what their customer needs and provide service that is first class. This property is a relatively recent arrival to the area surrounding the Torres del Paine National Park and we were very exited to visit! We left with an even better impression…the views, the food, the service, the activities programs and the rooms will all contribute to an incredible stay in this beautiful barren Patagonian desert.

Location

Nestled into the landscape on the shores of Lake Sarmiento on privately-owned land, a 20 minute drive from the entrance to the Park. It is 90km (1.5 hours transfer travel time) from Puerto Natales, standing by the Northern entrance of the Torres del Paine National Park.

Rooms

All rooms face and offer uninterrupted views of the Torres snow-capped mountains which stand at the opposite side of the Lake from the hotel. Being able to watch the mountains change colour with the changing light of the day is probably one of the most special things about the rooms at Tierra, as the whole Paine massif is framed by the outline of the window panes in each room. The three standard rooms line up on the ground floor whilst the majority of the superior rooms are on the first floor. Suites feature split-level accommodation with an ample sitting area and room for two extra beds. The windows in the suite rooms expand across the two floors from floor to ceiling to ensure the views of the macizo are not compromised.

Layout

The building blends seamlessly with the barren Patagonian surroundings thanks to the structural lines of the roof and soft curves around the vast communal and dining area of the building, which reflects the wind, carved rock formations and Patagonian steppe surrounding the property. We like the contemporary interior design using plenty of local materials. All the main door handles consist of wooden branches, for example, and there is a unique suspended wooden boat sculpture hanging from the ceiling in one of the communal area corridors. The property's architecture achieves elegant flowing lines that expand the whole breadth of the building from one end to the other giving you an expansive view, which is unusual. The infinity pool in the spa is a great place to admire the outstanding views onto the lake and Torres in the distance. The hotel counts with two comfortable open-space library rooms and wifi is available but only throughout the common areas. The common areas take on a really nice atmosphere in the evenings when you can watch the sun set over the Paine massif and guests congregate around the bar and central fireplace.

Features

There is a wide range of activities on offer to guests featuring full day and half day excursions as part of the full board package including hiking, 4x4 excursions, horse riding, sailing expeditions and mountain biking. The excursions menu includes more challenging hikes to Base Torres and Valle Francés as well as softer walks and vehicle-based excursions so there is something to suit most ages and abilities. We loved the food…it is a real gourmet a la carte experience for lunch and dinner and we were also impressed with the vast selection available in their full American breakfast. Another nice feature is that Tierra have set up a path guests can follow to the edge of Lago Sarmiento where they can marvel at the rare thrombolites at the water's edge and look out for ñandues, guanacos and tiny armadillos that graze in the scrub.

Food, service and activities

Isolation, but this is also part of the appeal of staying in Patagonia!
